One interesting technique that I learnt some time ago from an online tutorial as my source of reference, but have just recently started implementing this into my EP project is using granulisation. I recorded and bounced a shaker sound.

Then I added a place marker in the audio editor and stretched it as far as it could go, stretching the audio out.

I then altered the warping mode from it's default 'Beats' to 'Texture' mode, decreased the flux to allow every transient detail to sound more noticeable and did another recording of this audio whilst altering the 'Grain Size' in the editor, this created a new aesthetic sound which I could further manipulate to my advantage.

I repeated this process until I had a couple of options which I liked, I then cut these up further and continued arranging and manipulating them like previous audio samples
